Perhaps you have tried to decide whether to buy a laundry bag or a hamper or maybe you are just looking for a more inexpensive way to store laundry. If so, using a fabric bag would be a convenient and inexpensive way to store your laundry. Laundry bags come in different colors, styles and sizes and all thanks to Laundromats and for college students. The nylon and mesh bags are the more popular type of bags in the market. The smaller types of mesh bags are great as they can be put directly to the washer and are usually used in storing the intimate apparels or stockings or baby clothes. Unlike storage bags, these bags can be washed and placed directly in the dryer. Other laundry bags are made to have a space saving feature such as bags that can be placed just at the back of a door. In general, nylon bags are very popular as more clothes can fit inside it though overstuffing is not recommended as the seams of the bag could get stretched over time and they will shred or tear.
Laundry bags made of nylon as compared to mesh bags are stronger and more durable. They have several pockets on the outside too that allows you to place your laundry items such as detergents. The smaller version of these bags are great for traveling or when moving or for storage purposes. The larger ones are more preferred as they can store more clothes inside but it’s not recommended to use this bag if you want to wash the clothes inside it just like with mesh bags as these are water repellant.
The collapsible kind of laundry bag is also gaining popularity. These bags are made usually in nylon or mesh but you shouldn’t ever overstuff it. Overstuffing the bag will change its shape and it won’t stand properly. These bags are very modern and they are quite popular for small kids and young adults. There are also zip-up bags that are used for laundry and are made with synthetic materials. Handles are also usually attached. If you need to go to Laundromats, this type of bag is preferred as they are easy to transport plus they repel dirt too. Zip-up bags are preferred by those who need to travel by foot to reach the Laundromats.
Besides doing your own laundry at home, some prefer to go to Laundromats. Laundromats have popped up like mushrooms in the recent years and some of these Laundromats are self service but some people don’t like to do their own laundry so some Laundromats offer full service laundry.
How to make a homemade drawstring laundry bag
The drawstring type of laundry bag is handy in stashing of dirty clothes when you take them out to the Laundromat or when you are hauling supplies from your dormitory room to the shower. Even if you don’t have much experience in sewing you would still find it easy to make this type of laundry bag. You can also use different types of materials as you fancy. Here are instructions on how to make your own drawstring laundry bag.
• Make a decision on its size. A 22×24 inch bag would need ¾ yard of your preferred material. If you want a larger bag then buy more material. Denim is a good material but is hard to sew while sturdy cotton is best.
• You will also need 1 ½ yards of the cable cord. A cord made of cotton comes in different colors and diameters. For this bag you would need about ¼ inch in diameter. You can use different types of material as a string or cord such as a cotton rope or an old string from an old hoodie. The cord would be the laundry bag’s drawstring.
• After selecting your fabric, wash & dry it. If it comes out with wrinkles, iron it. If the ends are frayed, use a scissor to cut across each end a straight line.
• Place the right sides of your fabric together then fold them in half. On one side will be the opened two edges while on the other side will be the folded fabric and there’ll be open edges on top and bottom. Start sewing, best if you use a sewing machine, at the bottom’s closest edge to the folded edge. The bottom must be similar to the top part- decide on which of the ends you want to be the top part by checking the pattern of your material. If there’s no pattern, any end can be the top. Sew the bottom and continue to the sides with the 2 opened edges using half an inch seam. Stop your sewing when you reach 2 inches from the top. At that point, sew back and forth as this would be the stopping point.
• Iron the bag’s seams open and continue ironing up to the top part with the unstitched area. Fold under half an inch from the top edge then press this towards the other side of the material. Fold over another about 1 ½ to 2 inches and also press this to the other side. Sew along the edge on top that is very close to the edge of the folded material on the inside of the bag. Leave these ends open as they will e the casing for the drawstring.
• Push the cord material through its casing. This will be easy to do if you use a large safety pin on one of the end then push it through the casing until it reaches the other opening. Just make sure the end of your cord would remain outside of the casing as you move along to reach the other end. Then, tie a knot on both ends while making sure the knot is bigger than the hole so it won’t go in.
• Now turn the bag with the right side out and you’re done. You can now put your clothes inside the bag and close the drawstring tight.
